DISASTER & EMERGENCY FUNDRAISER

The recent wildfire in our hometown of West Milford, followed by the wildfires from Canada, have made us aware of changes we need to make to help our human and animal friends breathe easier during emergencies. One of our horses has asthma and allergies. Another one of our horses has facial paralysis and a collapsed airway from being beaten in the head by a former owner. Some of our volunteers also have asthma and allergies. We are already doing an environmental program using dust free shredded cardboard. We are recycling our asthma inhalers, and composting the manure to grow organic carrots for the horses. We are also steaming hay to reduce mold spores and dust particles in the air. By reducing unhealthy respiratory particulate, our volunteers and horses have cleaner air to breathe.

Despite our current endeavor, we never anticipated poor air quality for extended periods due to wildfires. We had to put our at-risk horses into the barn and close it up entirely, which made it very hot- and the smoky air was still smoky. So, we would like to improve add some HVAC equipment so we can keep everyone breathing easy during extended emergencies. We would also like to buy a trailer, for future evacuations and emergency transports. We borrowed a neighbor's trailer to help evacuate farms in West Milford during the wildfire, and because we are a 501©3, we offered our farm to those who needed to evacuate their animals. Having additional fencing panels to partition animals is also paramount for safety reasons. These wildfires have demonstrated the need to expand our ability to help ourselves AND others during an emergency by having a trailer, a healthier barn, and separation panels.
